Finding the church by road


From the M1, travelling northwards

Leave motorway junction 25 – at roundabout on slip-road, take second exit, marked for Risley and Sandiacre.

At cross-roads, go straight across, marked for Stanton by Dale (only).

Follow the road into Stanton by Dale village.

In the village, at the junction opposite Stanton Hall (nursing home), turn right (there’s a small sign on the grass island marked for Ilkeston).

Continue on the road – it goes through the Stanton Bonna iron works.

At T-junction with Lows Lane, turn left, then almost immediately follow the road round to the right.

Continue up to the T-junction opposite the Bulls Head pub. Turn right, then almost immediately follow the road round to the left.

Continue up to the big roundabout. Take the first exit (Derby Road), marked for Belper and Derby.

At cross-roads after about 50 yards, turn right, opposite the Miners Arms pub, into Albert Street (one way).

At cross-roads, the church is opposite you on the right, with a car-park on your right (free after 6.00 p.m. and on Sundays).

From the M1, travelling southwards

Leave motorway junction 26 – at roundabout on slip-road, take third exit, A610, marked for Ripley and Eastwood.

After about 1 1/4 mile, at the first exit, turn left, marked for Ilkeston and Awsworth.

At the roundabout, take the second exit, marked for Ilkeston, A6096.

At the end of the road, at the roundabout, take the second exit, bearing right, marked for Ilkeston.

Continue – you come into the town, with shops and houses on both sides. At the roundabout, crossing a dual carriage-way, turn left, marked for Nottingham A6007.

Continue up to the big roundabout at the top. Take the fourth exit into Derby Road, marked for Belper and Derby.

At cross-roads after about 50 yards, turn right, opposite the Miners Arms pub, into Albert Street (one way).

At cross-roads, the church is opposite you on the right, with a car-park on your right (free after 6.00 p.m. and on Sundays).

From Nottingham on the A609

Continue on the A609, through Trowell village and staying on the road, bearing right at St Helen’s Church, Trowell.

Continue up this road until you come into Ilkeston, and to a large roundabout.

At the roundabout, take the second exit, into Derby Road, marked for Belper and Derby.

At cross-roads after about 50 yards, turn right, opposite the Miners Arms pub, into Albert Street (one way).

At cross-roads, the church is opposite you on the right, with a car-park on your right (free after 6.00 p.m. and on Sundays).

From Derby, on the A6096

Continue on the A6096, through Kirk Hallam estate. The road continues past the Bull’s Head pub, then bears sharp left – continue up to the top.

At the roundabout at the top, take the first exit, into Derby Road, marked for Belper and Derby.

At cross-roads after about 50 yards, turn right, opposite the Miners Arms pub, into Albert Street (one way).

At cross-roads, the church is opposite you on the right, with a car-park on your right (free after 6.00 p.m. and on Sundays).

From Derby, on the A609

Continue on the A609, through West Hallam village. As you come into Ilkeston, you come to a set of traffic lights with a left turn or ahead only; this is by the fire station on your left, and the AMF bowling alley on your right.

At these lights, turn left into Oakwell Drive. After just a few yards, turn right immediately after the zebra crossing into Queen’s Drive. At the cross roads, the church is on your left, with a car park on the right (free after 6.00 p.m. and on Sundays).

From Heanor, on the A6007

Continue down the main road from Heanor (A6007) until you come to an island at the bottom, with a big Tesco’s opposite you on the left.

At this roundabout, take the third exit onto the dual carriageway (passing Tesco’s on your left).

Continue up this dual carriageway. At the first roundabout, go straight over.

At the second roundabout, take the fourth exit into Derby Road, marked for Belper and Derby.

At cross-roads after about 50 yards, turn right, opposite the Miners Arms pub, into Albert Street (one way).
